Cernyakovich Joe

"Nature is one of the greatest inspirations for my art."

Biography:

I am a Canadian artist with my roots in Yugoslavia. I started pretty early on in my life to draw pictures and I never stopped. I must of have been six or seven years of age when I began to draw and paint. I just kept on doing it and created many paintings over the past 40 years.

I studied art at school in Yugoslavia up to the age of 12. Then my parents immigrated to Austria where we lived for six months. From Austria we came to Canada in 1966. I studied art every school year here in Toronto. When I was attending high school, I was an Arts and Science student at Wexford Collegiate so art was of major interest to me. I kept on drawing and painting beyond school.

I worked as freelance graphic designer in the late 70’s and early 80’s. During that period I obtained a diploma in Drafting and I worked as a Draftsman/Illustrator in the Loudspeaker business. Eventually I wound up in Aerospace companies and served as a Technical Illustrator for 12 years.

I studied at the Ontario College of Art during the early 90’s. I studied intaglio printing and etching at the Open Studio in Toronto. Now i am artist with wide-ranging skills and experience.

I work in oil and coloured pencil mainly. These are my principal mediums of expression however, I have done some relief carving and furniture design and building as well.

I exhibited paintings with the Rotary Club, Toronto in 1970 and participated in student art exhibitions while at OCAD.
