Biography:
Born in 1952 in Vina del Mar, Chile, Jose "Nacho" Cartagena immigrated to Canada in October 1976 and calls Toronto his home.
Although not formally trained in fine art studies, Nacho has always maintained a close relationship with various mediums of art, whether by working with sculptors, or by taking part-time studies at the Bellas Artes School of Art in Vina del Mar.
Although mostly self-taught, it was through these many relationships, which included friendships with artists that he began to acquire many techniques and learn to develop a style of his own.
Nacho has shown his work as a part of exhibits with both the Mississauga Living Arts Centre and the Etobicoke Civic Centre, and was awarded the People's Choice Award in 2005. Most of his works are primarily held in private collections.
Nacho works with various materials such as wood and metal, and some unusual material, such as 'cork'.
His works primarily depict his interpretation of classic urban landscapes from cities in his native Chile, and also from Canada. Both the technique and the use of cork as a medium are unique to the artist.
In his free time, Nacho enjoys holding classes in his small teaching studio teaching to children.
